A 26-year-old man has admitted pulling down the Turkish national flag from inside a military compound in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir.

Omer "M" confessed to pulling down the flag during a hearing in a court in Diyarbakir on Sunday.

The incident in the district of Lice took place on June 8, following the funerals of two protestors killed during an illegal rally against the construction of a separate military outpost in the same area.

The two protestors died in hospital on June 7 after security forces intervened in a demonstration held by a pro-Kurdish group who attempted to block a road between the provinces of Diyarbakir and Bingol.

Hand-made grenades and stones were thrown at security forces during the incident.

Under the Turkish legal system, the full identity of Omer "M" will be revealed after he has been sentenced.
