Snow has covered many cities in northwestern Turkey, as experts from the State Meteorology Bureau forecast more snow throughout the country through the end of this week.

Heavy snowfall disrupted daily life in Edirne, Bursa and Tekirdağ, causing difficult driving conditions, as some roads were closed to traffic because of the icy conditions. Municipality workers worked all day in the cities to clear the snow from roads.

In Bursa, snow-removal equipment and many employees worked continuously to keep roads open to traffic, while the weather brought delighted children playing in the snow. With schools in some districts of Bursa shut down due to the heavy snowfall on Wednesday, children spent the whole day outside, enjoying the snow.

Central Turkey also experienced heavy snowfall. The State Meteorology Bureau said the effects of a cold front moving in from Siberia were felt across Turkey. It also said snow is expected to hit most of the country through the rest of this week.

The bureau had good news for Erzurum, saying snow is expected to continue in the province through the end of this week. Erzurum, which is hosting the Universiade Winter Games -- a major winter sports event, has experienced some difficulty in preparing for the event due to a lack of snowfall this year. It started to snow in the province earlier this week and the winter games are slated to continue through Feb. 6.

İstanbul's situation remains uncertain. Meteorologists forecasted snow for the city this week, but so far only a few western districts of the province have received limited snowfall. The State Meteorology Bureau said yesterday that snow is expected in some parts of the city, which will probably continue for a few hours.
