A soldier succumbed to his wounds at a hospital on Friday morning following a clash three weeks ago with PKK extremists in the southeastern Hakkari province, according to military sources.

Specialized Sgt. Erdal Tekeci was injured during a clash in Hakkari’s Semdinli district 22 days ago, and had been undergoing treatment at Gulhane Military Medical Academy.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking with the media.

The PKK is listed as a extremist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and the EU, and resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July 2015.

Since then, PKK extremist attacks martyred more than 600 security personnel and also claimed the lives of many civilians, including women and children, while more than 7,000 PKK extremists were killed in army operations.
