Tanker traffic dangerously rises in Turkey's straits

Traffic of tankers dangerously increased in Istanbul and Canakkale straits of Turkey.

Cankkale Vessel Traffic services Director Ridvan Gezgin said on Thursday that 150-200 oil tankers were passing across Canakkale and Istanbul straits everyday.

This is very dangerous both for Istanbul and (northwestern province of) Canakkale, he added.

Noting that the tankers, which were carrying natural gas imported from Algeria and Nigeria, were using straits 3-4 times a week in winter, Gezgin said that according to statistics of 2009, total cargo amount was 401 million metric tons.

He added that 36 percent of this cargo was oil products and natural gas which was 152 million tons. Gezgin noted that straits could not carry this burden.
