Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday said the government planned to conclude a tender for the construction of a third bridge over the Istanbul Strait that would connect the city's Asian and European sides.
"We will be done with the tender process for the third bridge this year," Erdogan told reporters while visiting the construction site of the Marmaray, an undersea rail tunnel project under the Bosphorus strait as well as the modernization of suburban rail lines along the Sea of Marmara from Halkali on the European side to Gebze on the Asian side.
Erdogan also said the third bridge might include motor vehicle transportation as well as a railway system.
"We have yet to make a final decision but most probably there will be both motor vehicle traffic and a railway system," he said.
