Turkey bombs PKK camps in northern Iraq

Turkish warplanes have bombed a militant camp at Hakurk in northern Iraq, Turkish news channels reported on Monday.

There were no further details or official confirmation of the attack, which came two weeks after Turkish jets hit other PKK targets in the region, killing four PKK militants.

There was no independent confirmation of the attack report, which Turkish media said came from the official Web site of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's union.

It said six warplanes had on Monday bombed the Sidekan region where the Hakurk camp is located.

Clashes in Turkey's southeast typically become more frequent in spring and summer due to more favourable weather conditions for the militants, who cross the border from their camps in the mountains of northern Iraq.

The PKK took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984 in a conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The United States and European Union both label the PKK a terrorist organisation.
