Turkey captures suspect over Catholic bishop death

Suspected killer of Roman Catholic bishop Luigi Padovese was captured.

Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz, governor of the southern province of Iskenderun, said that the suspected killer had been Padovese's driver for the last 4.5 years.

Lekesiz expressed profound sorrow over killing of the the pope's apostolic vicar in Anatolia who was stabbed to death in his summer mansion in the town of Iskenderun.

"The suspect was captured. According to the preliminary reports, the murder did not have a political motive. It was revealed that the suspect had been receiving treatment for psychological disorders. A full investigation is under way," he said.

During a mass at the Assyrian Catholic Church two days ago, Padovese condemned the act of terror in Iskenderun on Monday in which 6 troops were killed. He defined the town of Iskenderun as a cradle of different cultures and different faiths. Padovese also said that opening of the Assyrian church was the sign of importance attached by Turkish constitution and state to the freedom of religious belief.

Padovese died en route to hospital.
