Turkey revises rules on tobacco products

Tobacco products in Turkey will not be sold without a picture and written warning as of Saturday, May 1.

Speaking to the AA, Director General of Regulatory Agency of Tobacco and Alcohol Market (TAPDK) Mehmet Kucuk said that "as of May 1, all tobacco products will carry pictures and written information that warn consumers about the negative effects of such tobacco products".

Tobacco companies will be able to market their earlier produced goods without a picture until June 30.

As of January 1, 2011, all cigarette packs will have both a written warning and a picture on them.

Using pictures to warn consumers about the negative impact of tobacco on health is more effective than simply placing a written warning on the packs, Kucuk underlined.

So far, 179 tobacco brands out of 250 have obtained permission to produce tobacco products with both a written warning and a picture, Kucuk also said.
