Turkey's Civil Aviation Directorate said Sunday that the ash clouds from the volcanic eruption in Iceland started affecting Turkey's airspace.

The directorate said in a press release that the ash clouds from the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland on April 15 reached Turkey and the air space between FL 200-FL 350 was closed to flights between 4:30p.m. and 12:00 pm and local and international parties were notified.

It said airspace over the provinces of Zonguldak, Samsun an Sinop was closed to flights at altitudes between 20-35 thousand feets.

The directorate said the ash clouds were expected to affect Istanbul airspace after 12:00a.m.

The directorate also warned the airline companies to closely monitor the situation.
