Turkey says no threat over volcanic ash within next 24 hours

Turkey would not be affected by volcanic ash cloud within next 24 hours, an official from the ministry of environment said on Monday.

A meeting on impacts of volcanic ash cloud caused by the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, took place at General Directorate of State Airports Authority of Turkey (DHMI).

Hasan Zuhuri Sarikaya, undersecretary at Environment and Forestry Ministry, said they did not expect a threat or negative effect in Turkey stemming from volcanic ash cloud within next 24 hours.

Volcanic ash cloud which caused some flight restrictions over Istanbul and Ankara swept toward the north of Turkey, DHMI said earlier.

Meteorology officials said volcanic ash cloud was seen over airspace off the northern province of Zonguldak.

Flights were cancelled in several airports in Europe after huge ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano closed air space.
