Turkey says volcanic ash cloud sweeps toward North

Volcanic ash cloud which caused some flight restrictions over Istanbul and Ankara swept toward the north of Turkey, Turkey's state airports authority said on Monday.

A statement released by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority of Turkey (DHMI) said that ash cloud caused some flight restrictions over airspaces of Istanbul and Ankara and it swept toward the north. The statement said NOTAMs (the quasi-acronym for a "Notice To Airmen") were cancelled as of 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

Meteorology officials said volcanic ash cloud was seen over airspace off the northern province of Zonguldak.

Estonia's President Toomas Hendrik Ilves who paid a formal visit to Turkey between April 15-18 could not return to Estonia by plane due to flight cancellation and travelled to his country by Turkish President Abdullah Gul's official car on Sunday.

Flights were cancelled in several airports in Europe after huge ash clouds from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano closed air space.
