Turkey's northwestern province of Kocaeli became a candidate to host 2017 Summer Universiade.
Turkish Industry & Trade Minister Nihat Ergun said that Kocaeli officially applied to host the event, adding that the other candidates were from Brazil and Taiwan.
Ergun said that Turkey's northwestern province of Bursa also applied, but was rejected.
He noted that they would focus on lobbying activities in the countries which would cast votes in 2017 Universiade. Ergun also said that if a decision was made in November to organize the events in Kocaeli, the number of sports facilities in the city would significantly rise.
The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "university" and "olympiad".
