The 2011 Winter Universiade games to be hosted by Turkey's eastern Erzurum province has broken a record in the history of International University Sports Federation (FISU) thanks to the number of countries to participate in the event.

The number of countries to take part in the upcoming sports event has risen to 58 with the recent participation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, officials told AA on Wednesday.

Earlier, the highest participation was with 50 countries at the 2005 Winter Universiade games held in Innsbruck, Austria.

Moreover, Russia will have the most crowded sports delegation at the upcoming games, sources said.

The Russian delegation will comprise of a total of 263 sportsmen and technical staff.

Sources also noted that accreditation for the event would continue until the end of December and the number of participating countries might exceed 60.

Erzurum 2011 Winter Universiade games will take place between January 27 and February 6, 2011.

Athletes will compete in Alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, curling, ski jumping, cross country, Nordic combined, snowboard, freestyle skiing, figure skating and short track categories throughout the event.
