A court in Ankara has decided to block access to 44 proxy sites enabling people to visit the popular internet video service, YouTube, which was banned in Turkey.

A court in Ankara has decided to block access to 44 proxy sites enabling people to visit the popular internet video service, YouTube, which was banned in Turkey.

Prosecutor Kursat Kayral asked the Telecommunication and Communication Authority (TIB), a government body that oversees internet accessibility in the country, whether there was proxy sites enabling access to the YouTube.

Officials found 44 IP addresses and the court decided to block them.

YouTube was banned upon a decision of the Ankara 1st Penal Court of Peace on May 5, 2008 on charges of opposing to the Law on Crimes Against Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
