Civilian prosecutors have begun excavations in the Derecik neighborhood of Şemdinli, Hakkari province, in search of the bones of 12 villagers who were detained by security forces in 1994 and later killed.

The excavations were mainly based in the yard of a battalion in Derecik.

Derecik first witnessed excavations in July 2009, but they failed to find any bone fragments belonging to a human. These latest excavations were continuing.

Three lawyers from the Hakkari Bar Association, forensic experts, a specially authorized prosecutor from the Van Public Prosecutor's Office and a secret witness observed the excavations.
