Turkish geologist says Istanbul too crowded to handle strong quake

A powerful earthquake can be expected in Turkey, a prominent Turkish geologist has warned, saying that over nine thousand earthquake jolted last year places in Turkey and the country's immediate region.

"I hope we had enough time to complete necessary preparations. A strong tremor can hit Turkey anytime, anywhere," Professor Ahmet Mete Isikara told reporters during a visit to an elementary school Ankara.

Isikara said efforts should be multiplied to improve Istanbul's readiness to such a powerful earthquake.

"We need to close Istanbul's doors to newcomers. The city's population has reached 12 millon and the infrastructure cannot not handle that," Isikara said.

A 7.4 quake in August 1999 hit Marmara region, Turkey's main commercial hub and the country's most crowded region killing 17,000 people and caused billions in damage.

Scientists have said that the area could see another large quake in the next 30 years.
