Turkish PM: ISIL 'biggest threat to Islam'

World Bulletin / News Desk

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday called for Muslim clerics to “gather against the destructive display” of extremists such as ISIL.

Speaking to religious leaders in Ankara, Davutoglu said: “It is time for the world of Islamic clerics to gather against the destructive display. The mild Sunni and Shia people and all people who have an Islamic culture against extreme flows should stand shoulder to shoulder.

“Today, ISIL is the biggest threat to Islamic civilization as they put the wrong image of Islam in the minds of youngsters.”

Davutoglu told the state-appointed clerics: “All clerics should protect our young people against these extreme flows in every Turkish province.”

He also spoke against Diyanet - the government directorate responsible for religious affairs - being pulled into political debate.
