Turkish police to replace metal handcuffs with plastic ones

Police will no longer use 400-gram, metal handcuffs to detain suspects but plastic, colorful handcuffs that weigh only 30 grams, media reports said on Monday.

The police will continue to use metal handcuffs for some time but will gradually replace them with plastic ones. The National Police Department will first purchase 2,000 plastic handcuffs and deliver them to the relevant units.

The new handcuffs will be in different colors, as is the practice in European countries, according to the type of crime allegedly committed by the suspect being detained.

The plastic handcuffs will be single-use only.

The police will also use handcuffs made of polycarbonate and weighing 100 grams.

In addition, the National Police Department also plans to have new vests for police officers working in places with harsh winter conditions. The vests will have a built-in heating device and the police officers will be able to adjust the temperature manually. The directorate will initially buy 1,000 vests and distribute them to police officers in five provinces. More such vests will be bought if the police officers are pleased with the vests.
