Turkish Railway General Directorate (TCDD) said in a written statement Tuesday that eight TCDD personnel have been detained under an inquiry initiated by Izmir Public Prosecutor's Office but the TCDD office was not searched.

In a written statement the Directorate of TCDD declared that "the Inquiry is privately conducted by the Public Prosecutor Office and no search took place in the TCDD office."

"Detentions following three years of monitoring is out of rule of law"

Former Turkish Minister of Transportation Binali Yildirim said that the operation concerning the investigation and detentions in Izmir contradicted the rules of law and were being used as a tool for the upcoming local elections.

"It has been three years since the case has been reported to the prosecutor office but they are carrying out the operation now. It is clear that it has been initiated on purpose. We are not for corruption but we want to expose corruption." Yildirim questioned why the prosecutor did not intervene in the alleged corruption before and waited for three years.

A number of people were detained in Izmir in an operation conducted by the financial crimes police force unit on Tuesday morning. Police teams targeted various addresses simultaneously across Izmir and detained a group of people. At the same time, eight TCDD personnel have been detained within the scope of the inquiry initiated by Izmir Public Prosecutor's office.

Authorities have not made any statement regarding the latest detentions.
