The spring semester of the 2010-2011 academic year started yesterday and nearly 16 million elementary, middle and high school students as well as 600,000 teachers throughout Turkey are back at school after the two-week winter break which started on Jan. 28.

The second half of the academic year is full of examinations. Middle school students will take the Level Determination Examination (SBS) on June 4 and 5. The Free Boarding and Scholarship Examination (PYBS) for the fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth, 10th and 11th grades will take place on April 30, while the PYBS examination for the eighth grade is scheduled for June 4.

The first part of the university entrance exams, the Transition to Higher Education Examination (YGS), will take place on March 27. Those who pass the YGS will take the Undergraduate Placement Examination (LYS) to gain admission to an undergraduate department. The application period for the LYS will start on April 18 and will end on April 27. The LYS examination will take place on June 18-19 and June 25-26.

The 2010-2011 school year will end on June 17, when students will receive their final report cards and begin a three-month summer vacation.
