Turkish university rector commits suicide at home

Professor Erdogan Buyukkasap, rector of the Erzincan University in eastern Turkey, committed suicide.

Buyukkasap ended his life by hanging himself at his house in the university campus in the eastern province of Erzincan.

His body was found by a security official who came to the house to check him since he was late for work.

A full investigation is under way.

The chairman of Turkey's Higher Education Board rejected any connection between the suicide of Buyukkasap and last week's investigation in the university into an alleged corruption.

In an interview with the A.A, Professor Yusuf Ziya Ozcan said, "I talked to Governor Abdulkadir Demir of Erzincan and the deputy rector of the Erzincan University. They both told me that Professor Buyukkasap did not have any personal problems. Also, there was not a disciplinary inquiry against him."

Upon a question about last week's investigation at the university, Ozcan said, "two university staff was questioned about a tender worth of 100 million Lira. But Buyukkasap was not included in the investigation. No one knows what led him to kill himself."

Ozcan offered his condolences to Buyukkasap's relatives and friends at the university.

His body was found by a security official who came to the house to check him since he was late for work.

Born in northern province of Kastamonu in 1962, Buyukkasap graduated from Department of Physics and Mathematics of the Ataturk University in 1983. He began his academic career as a researcher at the Ataturk University in 1986. He had been rector of the Erzincan University since May 18, 2007 with 168 publications including 74 in foreign journals.
