Amid high tensions in the Black Sea region of Crimea, a US warship is believed to be heading towards Istanbul's Bosphorus straits on its way to the region from the Mediterranean.

According to Al Jazeera Turk, the warship sould arrive at the straits of Canakkale (Gallipoli) within a few days, from which it will pass to the sea passage that cuts through Turkey's most populous city, Istanbul.

According to international agreements, warships are allowed to pass through the Bosphorus after gaining permission 15 days beforehand. The report claims the US has been given such permission.

However, the revelation comes just a day after Russian warships also made their way through the Bosphorus on their way to Crimea, which lies on the other side of the Black Sea north of Turkey.
