Gülfidan K. (23), who killed her husband after he brutally beat her in November 2011, was found not guilty by reason of self-defense by a Sakarya court on Thursday.

Gülfidan's husband, Uğur K., beat her on Nov. 5, 2011, because she had looked at a naked man in a movie they were watching together after breakfast. She then choked him to death with the cord of an electric stove.

Prosecutors sought up to a 24-year prison sentence for Gülfidan, who was tried by the Sakarya 1st High Criminal Court. At a hearing of the trial on Thursday, a Sakarya public prosecutor stated that the couple had had some problems due to Uğur's jealous tendencies and had frequently quarreled. He added that the husband had begun to resort to violence during these quarrels that increased in intensity day by day.

“On the day of the incident, the husband sat on the sofa in the living room after insulting and beating his wife. Gülfidan, who was frequently subjected to violence at the hands of her husband, decided to kill him. She choked her husband with a cord,” the prosecutor noted in his statement.

After the prosecutor made this statement, Gülfidan's defense lawyers requested the court to acquit her based on self-defense.

The court delivered its verdict during the hearing and decided to acquit Gülfidan because the incident fit the conditions for an acquittal by reason of self-defense.

Meanwhile, a police investigation has suggested that Elif G., who was found dead in Aksaray province over a week ago, was killed by her husband.

The burned body of a woman was found in a forested area near the city of Aksaray on May 10. Police launched an investigation and later detained her husband, F.G., on suspicion of murder.

Police now believe Elif (26) was killed by F.G., who allegedly choked her to death and concealed her body in a box. According to police, F.G. rented a car and took Elif's body to a forested area where he burned it before sending her relatives a message that read, “I have escaped with my ex-boyfriend; don't worry about me.” He then filed a missing person's report for his wife in order to allay any suspicions directed at him.

Police have also detained F.G.'s 16-year-old brother in connection with the murder investigation.
