US doctors fear an outbreak in California which has affected up to 20 people carries similarities to polio.
The American Academy of Neurology has raised concerns over incidents of sudden paralysis after patients suffered from a nerve-attacking illness.
Currently only Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan are officially struggling with a polio endemic, but recent outbreaks in Syria also threaten to spread across the wider region.
Dr Emanuelle Waubant, a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco, said that it may have spread of Asia as only California was affected.
