Saudi Arabia on Monday reported three new fatalities and three new infections of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), bringing to 114 the total death toll from the virus in the country since September 2012.

In a statement, the Health Ministry said that a 45-year-old man and two women – aged 50 and 54 – had succumbed to the virus.

The ministry said that another three people had contracted the illness, bringing total virus infections in the Gulf country to 414 since September 2012.

Along with Saudi Arabia, MERS has also been reported in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Jordan and Oman.

MERS, for which no known cure is currently known, destroys the lungs and kidneys.
