Four Iraqi soldiers were killed and five others injured in a suspected ISIL attack in Iraq’s western Anbar province, military sources said early Monday.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, a colonel from the Iraqi army, Walid al-Dulaimi said that extremist group ISIL attacked the brigade command in al Kilo region, 160 kilometers west of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar.
Dulaimi said a clash erupted when ISIL militants attacked with machine guns on an army position.
The attack comes amid an ongoing offensive launched by the Iraqi army to recapture Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, from ISIL.
Mosul was overrun -- along vast swathes of territory in both northern and western Iraq -- by ISIL in 2014.
