Prime Minister of the regional administration in northern Iraq Nechirvan Barzani has said they would work hard to remove assailants staging bomb attacks from the country.

A series of bomb attacks which targeted a police station in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil killed 12 people and wounded 50 others on Sunday.

Barzani condemned the attacks in a statement on the official website of the government and extended his condolences to the families of those who were killed in the attacks.

Reminding that there had been no bomb attacks in the country since 2007, he stressed that those who stage bomb attacks attempt to damage security in the region.

"Security forces conducted successful work for the local parliamentary elections held on September 21. Therefore terrorists targeted a police station," said Barzani. "Our people have paid a heavy price for freedom. We will not give up on our our freedom and living freely and will work hard to get rid of all those dark forces."

Turkish MFA condemns attacks

The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Monday vehemently condemned Sunday's "cowardly" bomb attacks in Irbil and Baghdad.

In a written statement, the ministry said that two seriously wounded people had been transferred to Turkey from Irbil after the terrorist attack.

The statement said it is striking that the attack was organized right after the announcement of the parliamentary elections in the Iraqi Kurdish region.

"We do not believe that the circles, who want to embroil the peaceful and trusting atmosphere in the Iraqi Kurdish region and who try to ignite fights between brothers elsewhere in Iraq, will reach their aims," said the statement, adding that Turkey would continue its solidarity with Iraqi and Iraqi Kurdish region authorities.
