The U.S. President Barack Obama appointed Friday Brett McGurk as the new U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL.
McGurk replaced the retired Marine Gen. John Allen, who is stepping down after 13 months of service as the special envoy for the global coalition to fight ISIL.
McGurk was the deputy of Allen. Previously, he had served as Special Advisor to the National Security Council under Obama.
Allen will leave office on Nov. 12.
