Turkish jets destroyed Thursday weapons pits and shelters belonging to the extremist PKK organization in northern Iraq, the Turkish army said.

The air operation launched in the Zap region also killed two PKK extremists, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.

In a separate operation in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari on Wednesday, one PKK extremist was captured alive, while another was found dead, the statement added.

Other ongoing operations in the broader region also saw the seizure of a large number of ammunition as well as the destruction of four bomb-laden vehicles.

The PKK -- listed as a extremist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July last year.

Since then, PKK extremist attacks have martyred more than 700 security force members and also claimed the lives of many civilians, including women and children, while around 8,000 PKK extremists have been killed or apprehended.
