A Legoland theme park cancelled on Thursday a family fun day organized for Muslims after threats from far-right extremists.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision made after discussions with the organisers and local Thames Valley Police, following the receipt of a number of threatening phone calls, emails and social media posts to the Resort over the last couple of weeks,” the Legoland Windsor resort said in a statement.
Groups like the English Defence League and Casuals United had threatened to disrupt the event, which was criticized by right-wing journalists and commentators.
“We are appalled at what has occurred, and at the fact that the real losers in this are the many families and children who were looking forward to an enjoyable day,” the statement added.
About a thousand families were expected to attend the event organized by the Muslim Research and Development foundation.
The Faith Matters conflict resolution charity’s director, Fiyaz Mughal, said that the event’s cancellation “may embolden far right groups who will think that threats and intimidation will work.”
He added, “we must never allow this situation to happen again and extremists and fascists should not be appease; they must be peacefully and democratically countered at every step."
The theme park is usually closed during the winter months and would have been open specifically for the fun day.Last Mod: 28 Şubat 2014, 11:16
