Eight shark fishermen from the same family were killed by gunmen in Puerto Escondido, a resort city in the southern state of Oaxaca, authorities said Tuesday.

Four armed men entered a home late Monday and opened fire with heavy weapons, Oaxaca’s chief prosecutor, Joaquin Carrillo Ruiz, said in a press release.

“Four men lost their lives inside the house, and four more died while receiving medical care,” Carrillo Ruiz said.

“One of the main research lines to follow could be linked to other activities the men could have developed on the sea,” he said, adding that other avenues to explore could appear in the days to come.

The southern of state of Oaxaca has largely been exempted from drug violence that is ravaging other costal states.

Puerto Escondido is a popular tourist destination and its beach is popular with worldwide surfers.

Three other families have been attacked in similar circumstances in Mexico this month.

On July 9, 11 members of one family were killed shot dead in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of the northern state of Tamaulipas.

Hours later, three members of another family were gunned down in their own home.

A week later, five family members were also murdered in Ciudad Victoria.

According to officials, these incidents could be linked to rivalry between opposing drug cartels.
