A gun battle has broken out in Mexico between a group of vigilantes, who have occupied a small town after seizing it from a drugs cartel.

100 armed men raided the town of Nueva Italia in the western Michoacan state on Sunday morning and disarmed local police. They then clashed with the Knights Templar drugs cartel, which operates the drugs trade in the town.

The vigilantes, a group of locals who have been chasing the drug cartel out of towns in Michoacan, had previously taken control of the Paracuaro and Antunez town. They are believed to be heading towards the town of Apatzingan, the headquarters of the Knights Templar cartel.

Although they claimed to be a people-backed self-defense group, they have been accused of siding with the New Generation cartel.

The Knights Templar is also known to be at war with the rival Jalisco cartel.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in Mexico due to drugs related violence in the past 6 years.
