Brazil to act as guarantor in Colombian hostage releases

Brazil has agreed to act as a guarantor for the handover of five Colombian hostages held by leftist FARC guerrillas, bringing the captives a step closer to release, the Colombian government said on Thursday.

Brazil has helped Colombia with previous hostage handovers, providing helicopters and acting as a neutral party between the government and the guerrillas.

Rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, said earlier this month they would free three military officials and two local politicians in what they called a humanitarian gesture.

"Brazil has agreed to provide the necessary aid for the release of the five hostages," the Colombian president's office said in a statement. "The government is waiting for the FARC to define a date and place for the handover."
