Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif began a tour of Latin America in Cuba, where he signaled joint interest in promoting energy and industrial cooperation between the two nations, local media said Monday.

He also announced willingness to strengthen economic relations and thanked the Caribbean island for its support for his country’s struggle against sanctions imposed by the “great powers”, according to the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in science, academics, cultural, economics and trade, as well as coordination on international and bilateral affairs.

He also reiterated Havana’s support for Tehran's right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and stressed that Cuba would continue to oppose sanctions and unilateral coercive measures against Iran, according to ACN.

Taking advantage of the lifting of economic sanctions imposed by the United States against both countries, Zarif also attended the first business seminar made to explore trade and investment opportunities.

After Cuba, Zarif plans to visit Chile, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Venezuela in an attempt to strengthen cooperation and trade in the region.
