Turkish dailies on Wednesday dedicated their front pages mostly to news of a gun attack on Adnan Yildiz, former MP for the centre-right in the Turkish parliament, the latest developments in Ukraine, and "The Blood Moon" - a total lunar eclipse which made the moon take on a deep red color. The blood moon, in case you missed it last night, is a dramatic name for a lunar eclipse that briefly makes the light reflected back from the moon to earth appear red.

Daily SABAH reported that at least three people were killed in the Istanbul gun attack on the former member of parliament. Yildiz was a MP in the Turkish parliament from 1983 to 1991. He was previously the target of an extortion attempt in 2000 when Turkish gang leader Nuri Ergin demanded $100,000 from Yildiz.

Daily HABERTURK headlined "Just for a bag of dollars" and said two unidentified assailants riding on a motorcycle opened fire on Adnan Yildiz’s car near his house in the city's wealthy Bakirkoy district, killing his wife and daughter.

Similarly, daily HURRIYET wrote "ambush at 08.40 a.m." adding that Yildiz, who runs a currency exchange office, was attacked by two unidentified assailants.

The latest developments in Ukraine were also covered heavily on Wednesday.

Ukraine's mostly Russian-speaking east appears to be current flashpoint in the conflict between Russia and the West over Ukraine's territorial integrity. Over the last four days, pro-Russian separatists took control of a number of public buildings in eastern and south-eastern regions of Ukraine.

"East-Ukraine cities fall" said daily SABAH, reporting that East-Ukraine falls city to city as Pro-Russian protests spread.

Daily YENI SAFAK says "East is getting out of Ukraine's control" by adding the tensions have mounted in recent days after pro-Russian rebels seized buildings in about 10 towns and cities across eastern Ukraine.

Several Turkish dailies covered the "Blood Moon" phenomenon where the full moon turns a coppery red as it passes into Earth's shadow. During the process, the moon's bright glow dims, taking on a red hue because of shimmers of sunlight and sunsets seeping through the Earth's atmosphere.

Dust and sulfur dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere can affect the size of the shadow. The moon has to be full for the total lunar eclipse to occur. As more of the moon emerges from the shadow, its red tint fades as it gets lighter and transitions to its normal silver color. The entire reddening process takes about an hour.

"World views" said daily HURRIYET, reporting from North and South America, where the blood moon was most prominent. Observers pointed at the spectacle with binoculars, telescopes and cellphones.

Daily STAR headlined "The world is eclipsed with Blood Moon" and said in addition to latest eclipse on Tuesday, it will make another appearance on October 8 of this year, and April 4 and September 28 of next year.
