On Monday, Turkish dailies mostly covered Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's remarks on his way back from Germany, delay in the inauguration of the high speed train, reflections on Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan winning the Palme d'Or in the Cannes Film Festival and the aftermath of the earthquake that shook western Turkey, including Istanbul, on Saturday.
Daily VATAN reported that the Turkish PM spoke to journalists on the plane on his way back to Istanbul from Cologne and made significant remarks on Turkey's agenda. Erdogan said he disapproved the 0.5 point rate cut by the Turkish Central Bank last Friday, criticizing it as insufficient.
The STAR daily featured Erdogan's remarks over Turkey's accession process to European Union. The PM said chapters 23 and 24, regarding judiciary and rights issues, may be opened in the near future. He also said the ruling AK Party will announce their presidential candidate in the middle of June.
The TURKIYE daily featured the allegations of sabotage with regard to the ongoing construction of high-speed train which will connect Istanbul to Turkey's capital, Ankara. The train was expected to start running in May, but testing continues. Transportation Minister Lutfi Elvan said the ministry called for the delay after more than 200 signaling cables were cut.
Daily RADIKAL ran the headline "Common Joy," referring to Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan winning the highest honor of the Cannes Film Festival, only the second Turkish director to do so, saying he has united Turkish people with the success of his movie "Winter Sleep."
Daily SABAH said some people in Gokceada island and western Turkey spent the night in the streets after Saturday's earthquake, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale.
