Egyptian prosecutors on Tuesday referred 190 leading Muslim Brotherhood members, including group leader Mohamed Badie, to a criminal court in connection with violence last summer in the canal city of Port Said.
Defendants in the case include Salafist preacher Safwat Hegazi and former lawmakers Akram al-Shaer, Ahmed Tawfiq and Gamal Obeid.
The charges relate to the killing of five people, along with a jailbreak in the city, in the wake of last August's bloody dispersal of two protest camps staged by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in which hundreds of people were killed.
Meanwhile, prosecutors referred Gamaa Islamiya leader Asim Abdel-Maguid and 30 Muslim Brotherhood leaders to a criminal court on charges that they had committed acts of violence last summer in the Upper Egyptian Assuit province.
