Three people were killed and nine arrested in twin security operations by the Bahraini authorities, one of which stopped escaped terrorism suspects from fleeing the country, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry has said.
Both operations were reportedly based on information obtained during investigations of a Jan. 1 jailbreak at Bahrain’s Jau Prison.
"A vessel seeking to leave Bahrain for Iranian waters was monitored and intercepted in an area south of Mina Khalifa Port," read a ministry statement issued late Thursday.
Individuals aboard the vessel opened fire on coast guards after ignoring the latter’s order to halt, it added.
"The ensuing exchange of fire resulted in the death of three people and the eventual arrest of seven others," according to the ministry.
"Those arrested confirmed they were in contact with, and due to meet, accomplices in Iranian waters," the statement read.
A second operation carried out the same day led to the arrest of another two people, the ministry added, noting that intensive efforts were now underway "to apprehend the remaining fugitives".
On Jan. 1, gunmen attacked Bahrain’s Jau Prison near Manama, leading to the escape of at least 10 inmates who had been facing terrorism charges.Güncelleme Tarihi: 10 Şubat 2017, 14:04
