Ethiopian Ambassador to Ankara Mulatu Teshome Wirtu said African Union could not stand silent about Egyptian military coup, regarding to union's suspension of Egypt's membership after coup.
Wirtu, evaluating the reasons of the suspension, said "In according to African Union charted we cannot simply stand silent."
Reminding that almost all African countries had been victim of coup d'etat, Wirtu stated "That is why African countries came to common agreement that if any regime changed with the violence or coup d'etat we should not condone this country or this regime, we should expel it or suspend its membership."
"Expressing one's own position should comply with the national interest of this country's. Simply you cannot say 'I like' or 'I hate'. Interests come first" said Wirtu related to the attitude of western countries that they did not call the military coup as "coup."
African Union suspended Egypt's membership on July 5 after Egyptian army's military coup in the country.
