A senior leader, who masterminded a failed attempt on the life of Egypt's Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim last September, has died, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group said on Saturday.

Tawfiq Mohamed Freig, one of the group's founders, died last Tuesday when a bomb in his possession went off during a road accident, the group said in a statement.

The group said that Freig was the mastermind of a series of bombings targeting a pipeline carrying Egyptian natural gas to Israel.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks against army personnel and policemen in recent months.

A security source, meanwhile, said that Freig's death has not yet been confirmed.

"The group may be announcing his death now only to deflect police attention away," the security source told Anadolu Agency.

In early January, the Egyptian Interior Minister accused Freig of participating in the bombing of the security directorate of the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, which left 16 people, including 14 policemen, killed.

Three months earlier, Ibrahim survived a bomb attack that targeted his convoy in Cairo.
