Arabs call on Turkey to veto Israel's OECD bid

World Bulletin / News Desk

Just limited days prior to the vote on Israel's bid to OECD membership, calls from Arab public to Turkish PM not to allow Israel's attempt are mounting.

The efforts come after a UK-based human rights group called on Turkey's PM to veto OECD membership of Israel that has occupied Palestinian lands for decades and targeted Erdogan with inappropriate remarks on Erdogan.

As Arab writers to pen articles on this subject one after another, the campaigns on the facebook call on Erdogan to veto Israel's membership.

Islamic Human Rights Commission or IHRC, that has launched the petition campaign on its website, said, "Turkey is the only Muslim member of the OECD, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and holds right and responsibility to veto Israelis admission to the OECD."

IHRC said, on the petition, "Israel is due to be admitted to the exclusive economic club, OECD despite its failure to comply with the demands and standards. But the organization in January 2010 announced that the OECD will “complete” Israel’s membership in 2010 (expected to take place in May)."

Israel killed nearly 1500 Palestinians, a third of them children in the 22-day military aggression in Decemcer 2008 on Gaza and wounded more than 5,000 Palestinians.

Israel faces a UN report that accuses war crimes of Gaza offensive and refuses to end settlements on the occupied lands despite all international calls.

"Erdogan! You are the hope!"

The OECD needs consensus to admit a new member state into the organization. As well as economic prosperity, the OECD has “strict” criteria in terms of democratic and human rights records of member countries.

Lebanese former MP and a leading Arab writer Dr. Nasser Kandil urged Arab countries to embrace their own issues and to encourage Turkey to veto Israel's OECD membership, in an article published in Syria's official state newspaper Tishrin, on May 2, 2010.

Dr. Kandil claimed that Israel presented a population notification with a racist attitude calling the Palestinian Arabs in the country as "rayah" in order to become a member of the organization. He said, that "many years ago, the racist South African regime did the same as it was seeking membership to the OECD".

According to the Lebanese writer, Israel's membership to the OECD works against Arab countries. As an OECD member, Israel would gain the right to veto any Arab country and could prevent any Arab country to become a member or to present a list of conditions.

Dr. Nasser Kandil, while characterizing Turkey's stance against Israel "courageous", called the Arab leaders and Arab public to mobilize into action, to pressure the European countries and urge Turkey to have the courage.

On the other hand, a group of young Arabs on Facebook started a campaign with the slogan of "Erdogan! You are the hope! Do not miss this opportunity!" The page created for urging Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to veto Israel's OECD membership.

The campaign continues at the facebook address of: http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php #! / posted.php? id = 115415601825703& share_id = 103832052994653 & comments = 1 # s103832052994653

"Together, let us call Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdogan to veto Israel's OECD membership" says the page. Also on the page, a comment that criticizes the campaigners for asking help from a "foreigner" is answered, saying that "Erdogan is not a foreign leader but a Muslim one."
