The attack targeted a recruitment center of the PYD, the Syrian affiliate of the extremist PKK organization, in the PYD-held town of Qamishli.
The sources said 20 people were killed and 50 others injured in the attack.
Syrian state TV, however, put the death toll at 22.
According to local sources, the explosion has also left a massive trail of destruction in the town.
ISIL extremist group reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated on social media websites.
