Egypt's outgoing cabinet will formally submit its resignation at a meeting expected to start at around midday (1000 GMT) on Saturday and a new government is likely to formed very swiftly, the cabinet spokesman said.
President Hosni Mubarak said overnight that he had asked the government to resign after countrywide protests.
"We are just going now for a meeting, which should start in an hour, for the resignation," Magdy Rady told Reuters.
"The president will announce who will be the next prime minister. But what I understand from the president (in his speech) is that the government should be formed very fast today," he said.
