Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed several deadly attacks against the Egyptian army, including a failed September assassination attempt on the life of Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim.

The Egyptian army on Monday killed a senior leader of al-Qaeda-linked Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group in North Sinai.

Ibrahim Mohamed Freg, aka Abu Suhaib, was killed in an ambush in Sheikh Zuweid city, army spokesman Ahmed Mohamed said in a Facebook statement.

He said man died in an exchange of fire with army troops on a road leading to al-Touma village.

Another armed man was arrested.

Sinai has been at the center of heightened violence against police and army personnel since the July 3 ouster of president Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first freely-elected leader, by the army.
