Egypt's former army chief-of-staff and potential presidential contender Sami Anan has survived an assassination attempt, his media office said Monday.
"Anan survived an assassination attempt shortly after leaving his office," the media office said in a statement.
According to the statement, the former chief of staff was chased by two vehicles, but his driver managed to escape.
The statement held the security agencies responsible for the safety of the former chief of staff from what it described as such "despicable" attempts.
Interior Ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif, for his part, termed the alleged assassination attempt as an "electoral propaganda".
He said that security agencies have not received any report about the alleged attempt on the life of the former chief of staff.
"Investigations proved that the allegation is groundless," he said.
Police chief Mahmoud Farouq, for his part, said security agencies have not received any report about the alleged attempt on Anan's life.Last Mod: 11 Mart 2014, 09:57
