Iran arrests 40 for suspected ISIL links

The Iranian authorities on Tuesday arrested 40 people over suspected links to the ISIL terrorist group in West Azerbaijan province, according to an Iranian member of parliament.

Iran’s MEHR news agency quoted MP Nader Ghazipour as saying that local authorities in West Azerbaijan had carried out the arrests in the cities of Piranshahr, Sardasht, Mahabad, Bukan and Takab.

The arrest campaign, according to the news agency, led to the arrest of 40 suspected ISIL members and the discovery of several arms caches.

On June 7, the terrorist group claimed responsibility for two separate attacks in Tehran that left more than 20 people dead and dozens injured.
