Iran to allow Syria-bound Russian aircraft

Russia has Iran’s permission to use its airspace for Russian cargo aircraft heading towards Syria, a Russian diplomat in Iran said Wednesday.

"Our embassy has been given the access today for Russian planes that will carry humanitarian aid to Syria," Maksim Suslov, press attache at the Russian Embassy in Tehran, told Russia's TASS News Agency on Wednesday.

He also confirmed the permission by Tehran authorities during his remarks to Anadolu Agency in Tehran.

The move by Moscow followed Bulgaria's announcement on Tuesday that it would deny access to its airspace to Russian transport planes bound for Syria, as Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolai Nenchev told the press of intelligence on weapons onboard.

In response, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow will continue to ship "humanitarian relief aid" to Syria using alternative routes.
