An Iraqi official delegation will visit Saudi Arabia on Sunday for talks with Saudi officials, according to Iraq’s foreign ministry.

The visit comes two weeks after a landmark visit by Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir to Baghdad.

“The delegation will hold talks on issues of mutual interest,” ministry spokesman Ahmed Jamal said in a statement on Saturday.

He said the talks will focus on bilateral relations, borders and trade exchange.

Relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia went fractious last year when Baghdad asked Riyadh to replace its envoy Thamer al-Sabhan after he accused Iran-allied militias of planning to assassinate him.

In his recent visit, al-Jubeir told Iraqi officials that the kingdom plans to appoint a new ambassador in Baghdad.

Observers believe that the top Saudi diplomat’s visit aimed to help Iraq break away from the Iranian domination.
