An Iraqi soldier was killed and three others were injured late on Thursday in clashes with an armed group suspected of kidnapping 18 Turks, the Iraqi army said.

The clashes reportedly took place in central Baghdad, according to Iraqi army officials.

Men in military uniform had abducted the group, including 14 workers, three engineers and an accountant on Wednesday after raiding a construction site of a Turkish company, Nurol Holding, in Sadr city, a Baghdad suburb.

Ahmed Jamal, spokesman of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, said earlier on Thursday that the issue “will be resolved in the next few days.”

In June 2014, 49 Turkish hostages, including diplomats, consular officials and their families, were kidnapped from Turkey’s Mosul consulate, a day after ISIL took control of Iraq’s second-largest city. The victims were later released.

Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since ISIL overran Mosul before capturing additional territory in both Iraq and neighboring Syria.
