Northern Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) has said it would reopen the Peshabur border crossing with war-torn Syria on Thursday to allow in humanitarian and medical aid.

"The KRG presidency decided to reopen the border crossing with Syria," Sevket Berbuhari, head of the Peshabur border authority, said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Berbuhari said the reopening of the crossing was meant to alleviate the suffering of Syrians stranded along the border.

Medicine, foodstuffs and humanitarian aid would be allowed through the terminal tax-free, he said.

The Peshabur crossing and the Syrian Semelka terminal were both closed previously due to political rifts between the KRG and Syria’s Democratic Union Party (PYD).
